A River Town on the Wrong Side of a Commute

The Downtown Mount Holly Historic District was laid out around a cotton mill and the streets were sized accordingly. Angled and parallel spaces along South Main Street are narrower than a modern crossover really wants, the buildings sit close to the curb, and evening traffic around the restaurants fills the block. That combination produces the most common repair we do here: a single clean door ding, usually on the driver's side, usually with the paint completely intact.

The vehicle mix is trucks and commuter SUVs, and it collides badly with the parking on offer. The small lots serving Main Street businesses were striped for the cars of an earlier decade, so a full-size truck in one of those bays leaves its neighbour a gap rather than a door's width. The NC-27 corridor and the streets running down toward the Catawba carry the daily traffic through it. Mount Holly has more than ten miles of Catawba River frontage and sits directly below Mountain Island Lake, and the access points — the Tailrace Marina area, River Street Park, the smaller launches along the water — get busy from spring through early autumn.
