Is the metal stretched beyond recovery? Is the dent's location workable — not buried behind a structural brace or wrapped around a panel edge? And has the impact damaged anything under the skin, like a door beam or inner structure?

Shallow and broad is the friendly profile. A big dent that flows gently — no sharp creases, no crushed lines — has displaced a lot of area but stretched the metal very little, and much of it will often release in large sections as pressure is applied correctly. Deep, sharp, or folded damage is the hostile profile: metal that has been stretched or creased hard holds its new shape stubbornly, and past a certain point no amount of technique brings it fully back.

Large dents are rarely fixed with rods alone. The modern approach is a combination: glue pulling to bring the bulk of the dent up from the outside, then precision push work from behind to refine what remains. Travis adheres large glue tabs across the dent's low areas, pulls the displaced metal outward in a planned sequence, and knocks down any resulting high spots with a blending hammer and knockdown tools.

The sequence matters enormously. Pull the wrong spot first and you lock tension into the panel; pull correctly and the metal releases toward its original shape in stages. Once the panel is roughed back to within a millimeter or two, the work shifts to traditional PDR — light board, rods, and hundreds of small pushes to bring the surface to true. On a big repair this cycle of pulling, pushing, and blending can repeat many times over several hours.

Glue tabs bond to the paint temporarily and release cleanly with alcohol, so the factory finish comes through the entire repair untouched — the whole point of choosing PDR over a repaint in the first place. Some damage is simply beyond PDR, and pretending otherwise wastes your money. If the paint is cracked or scraped through across the dent, PDR can restore the shape but the finish will still need paint work — sometimes that hybrid approach makes sense, sometimes it doesn't. If the metal is torn, folded back on itself, or stretched into a bulge that won't shrink, filler and paint are the honest fix. And if the impact bent inner structure — a door beam, a radiator support, a pillar — that's collision repair, full stop.
